When B2B Technology companies think they know their Ideal Customer Profile – But don’t!

Every B2B Technology company I speak to has an ICP document. It usually says something like: "Mid-market tech companies with 200–1,000 employees, experiencing these painpoints."

That's a segment. That's not an ICP.

A real Ideal Customer Profile is built from the intersection of three things:

1. Who has actually bought from you - and remained a client?

Not your biggest logo. Not your easiest close. The customers with the lowest churn, the highest NPS, and the most organic expansion revenue. They tell you who you exist for.

2. Who is most likely to be in-market right now?

Firmographic data matters, but behavioural signals matter more. The company that's just hired a new VP of Operations. The one that's implementing a new CRM. The one whose competitor just launched a competing product. Timing is as important as fit.

3. What problem do they believe they have - not what problem you know they have?

This is where most Technology marketing goes wrong. Your solution may be genuinely transformative. But if your prospect doesn't describe their pain using your language, your messaging will never land.

When ICP is wrong, everything downstream is wrong. Your lead-gen campaigns target the wrong audiences. Your nurture content speaks to the wrong problems. Your Sales team ends up in the wrong rooms, having the wrong conversations.

And worse: you can't see any of this in your pipeline data, because you're measuring volume rather than fit.

At Enforma, we help B2B Technology companies build ICPs that are precise, evidence-based, and actionable - not aspirational PowerPoint slides that gather dust.

When did you last audit your ICP against your actual closed-won data?
